What We Believe - Noah's Arc decoration close up, Lamesa Church of Christ

God is the one and only, Almighty, supreme being.  He is the creator of the universe, and He has shown His love to us in the wonderful blessings He makes available to us.  He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into this world to give us an example of how we should live our lives (I Pet. 2:21), and then allowed Jesus to die on the cross so that, by His blood, we could be cleansed of our sins, and live eternally with Him.

Son of God Jesus Christ

Son of God

Jesus Christ

Jesus is the one and only Son of God (John 3:16), and is Himself, God the Son.  He was born of a virgin into this world, and was ultimately crucified, buried, and raised from the dead after three days (I Cor. 15:1-4).  Having ascended back into the heavens (Acts 1:9-11), He now sits at the right hand of God and will one day return to gather His church to meet the Lord (I Thes. 4:16-17).  The salvation available to all men in Christ is what is referred to as the Gospel, or good news.

We are saved by the grace of God, through our faith in Jesus Christ (Eph. 2:4-9).  Our salvation is not earned, but is a gift of God.  Salvation is available to all who will be obedient to God’s commands, which include:

HEARING the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The true Word of God – “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17)

BELIEVE that Jesus is the true Son of God.

Having heard the Gospel, one must believe, and act on his faith.  “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”  (John 8:24)

REPENT of your sins.

“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” (Acts 3:19)  Repentance is a turning away from the sin that has been so much a part of your life, and making a change in one’s lifestyle, from sin to godliness.

CONFESS your faith in Jesus as the Son of God.

You must confess that Jesus is the Lord.  He is Lord whether you confess it or not, but it is unto your salvation that you must acknowledge His deity and His ownership. (Romans 10:9, 10)  “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.  But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.”  (Matthew 10:32, 33)

You must BE BAPTIZED by immersion.

After hearing the gospel preached by Peter on the day of Pentecost, the people asked, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37)  Peter answered, “Repent and let everyone of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38)

You must live a FAITHFUL LIFE until death.

In the fellowship of God’s people.  “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”  (I Corinthian 15:58)  “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”  (I John 1:7)

Baptism is that act of obedience one enters into by which the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses one from their sins.  Saul of Tarsus (who became the apostle Paul) was told by Ananias, “And now why are you waiting?  Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” (Acts 22:16)

The act of baptism is properly administered with the action of full immersion into water, and is a symbol of our death to our life of sin, so that the old body of sin is done away with, and we are raised to walk in newness of life.  (Romans 6:4-7)

The Bible is the inspired, inerrant, authoritative Word of God.  “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  (II Timothy 3:16, 17)  It contains all that is needed and that pertains to life and godliness (II Peter 1:3), and there is nothing that needs to be added, or taken from, God’s Word for you and me.

The church is a family of believers that belongs to Christ.  As people, we are imperfect folks who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus, and added by God to His church – Acts 2:47.  We assemble each Lord’s Day to worship God and to encourage one another.  Our worship will include partaking of the Lord’s Supper each and every first day of the week, Acappella singing to God, praying, giving, and the preaching of a gospel sermon.
